The research data management support of the University of Eastern Finland - UEF Data Support – provides services and training to assist UEF researchers in data management at various stages of the research project. We also provide DMP and DMPol commenting services at any point of your research (see further instructions, link will be added). The services are provided jointly by the Library, IT-services, Legal Affairs, Information Management Services, Data Protection and Information Security through a single service address.

UEF Data Support organizes data management training, courses and offers open materials, see further below in sections Data Management Courses and Guides. Although UEF Data Support does not provide support for research methods, we try inform about the related training, see Training in research methods.

Data Management Courses and Guides (UEF)
For whom: UEF graduate students, UEF doctoral school
When: 15th of September 2025–4th of May 2026
Registration: Link to Peppi (registration for 2025–26 during 1st of August 2025 and 24th of April 2026)
Description: An optional course that forms part of the doctoral school studies at the University of Eastern Finland. The course covers, e.g., how to define research material and data, FAIR principles, ethics and data protection, metadata and documentation, data storage during the research and opening and storing data after the research. There is an additional optional module (1 ECT) that focuses on data description (documentation, metadata). Description of the course is found in Peppi.

For whom: For researchers (including doctoral candidates), thesis supervisors, research group leaders and other interested UEFians.

Language: Finnish and English (simultaneous translation in English subtitles, materials in Finnish and English). NOTE: March 12th lecture is held in English with the possibility of having simultaneous translation in Finnish subtitles.
Description: In six different lectures, the basics of data management will be covered, such as data description, ethical and legal aspects, data preservation, and creating a data management plan. The lectures will also introduce the Qvain and DMPTuuli tools, and most importantly, provide an opportunity to share thoughts with other researchers.

1. Research data management in a nutshell

Description: We go through the basic elements of research data management (RDM): What research data are, what data management and data quality mean in practice.

2. Ethical and legal aspects in RDM
Time and place: February 28th 2025, 10.15-11.45, Teams (you will get the link after registering)
Description: We examine what research ethics means in research data management, what handling personal or sensitive data is and what kind of immaterial property rights concern research data (e.g., ownership, licenses).

3. Describing and documenting research data
Time and place: March 11th 2025, 10.15-11.45, Teams (you will get the link after registering)
Description: We discover what describing and documenting data mean, why and how these should be done, what FAIR-principles are and how to follow those principles, what a persistent identifier is and how to get one.

4. Qvain-tool for describing research data
Time and place: March 12th 2025, 14.15-15.45, Teams (you will get the link after registering)
Description: In this session, the Qvain tool is introduced and shown in practice: what Qvain is and how to use it. We also discuss how Qvain tool promotes open science and open research data. NOTE: This lecture is held in English with the possibility of having simultaneous translation in Finnish subtitles.

5. Storage and sharing of the data during and after the research project
Time and place: March 18th 2025, 14.15-15.45, Teams (you will get the link after registering)
Description: We discover, how to follow the guidelines for UEF’s storage solutions and backups for own data, how data can be shared with others during and after the research, what do data opening, publishing, and archiving mean and where to find a suitable storage place for the data after the research.

6. Data management plan and DMPTuuli
Time and place: March 20th 2025, 10.15-11.45, Teams (you will get the link after registering)
Description: We go through step by step how to plan research data management in practice, e.g, with the DMPTuuli tool. We also discuss how to describe the responsibilities and estimate the resources needed in research data management.

Description: An optional course, which forms part of the doctoral school studies at the University of Eastern Finland. The course introduces open science from two perspectives: open publishing and open research data. Description in Peppi (see registration).

Description: A part of Syventävät informaatiotaidot -course (8020370 1 ECT), including also, e.g., information retrieval and open science. The material for research data management is aimed at students who need the basics about RDM.

How to write a decent data management plan (DMP)?
For whom: UEF researchers applying for funding from the Academy of Finland and anyone else interested in the topic.

Themed trainings focus on various aspects of research data management, such as secure processing and storage of data in UEF or contracts and intellectual property rights (IPR) in the context of international research projects. Opening research data: Training (1 h) covers topics related to opening and licensing research data, such as the benefits of opening research data, different degrees of opening data, Creative Commons licenses, what should be considered when opening research data and where research data can be opened.
Opening and licensing source code: Training (1 h) covers opening code and programming/computational environment. In addition, the training has introduced the most common licenses of open source codes (MIT, GNU General Public).

Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR)
